Their sorrows will multiply, those who hurry after another god. I will not offer their blood offerings, and I will not take their names upon my lips.
David clearly rejects idolatry and worship that turns away from the Lord. Those who “hurry after another god” place their hope in what cannot save or give true good, and the result is the increase of sorrow. False gods can promise many things, but they cannot give the life and security a person needs. David also refuses to take part in their worship. The words “I will not offer their blood offerings” show that he does not want to have any share in idolatrous sacrifices. And the phrase “I will not take their names upon my lips” means that he does not want even to speak their names in the sense of worship, honor, or loyalty. It is not simply about never pronouncing a name, but about keeping completely away from false worship. This verse reminds the believer that faithfulness to the Lord cannot be divided. Modern idols are not only visible statues: money, power, pleasure, or the self can take the place that belongs to God. Therefore a person must examine what he places his hope in and what truly governs his life.
