I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord. apart from You I have no good thing.”
David receives the Lord as the supreme Good of his life. The words “Apart from You I have no good” do not mean that the created good things that exist in the world have no value. Family, friendship, food, work, and the other gifts of life are also from God. Yet none of them can replace the Lord Himself. He is the source of every good, and without Him even abundant gifts cannot give the soul final satisfaction. This statement is a declaration of the believer’s heart’s priority. A person often seeks God for the good things He gives, but David reminds us that the greatest Gift is God Himself. Faith matures when a person learns to say, “You are my Lord” not only in times of success, but also in times of loss. In Christ, the believer recognizes the fullness of God’s grace and learns to receive every good in his life as a gift coming from Him, without placing the gift above the Giver.
