With the words “Preserve me, O God,” David entrusts his whole life to the Lord’s protection. Here he does not necessarily ask to be delivered only from one specific danger, but confesses his continual dependence on God. A person needs God’s protection not only in a time of trial, but throughout the whole course of life. The phrase “For I take refuge in You” shows where the foundation of David’s confidence lies. He does not rely on his own strength, position, or wisdom, but chooses God as his security and shelter. This verse teaches that taking refuge in God is not merely asking for help in a moment of danger, but continually committing one’s life to His care. The believer recognizes that his strength and abilities are limited, and therefore entrusts his safety to the Lord. That reliance does not make him careless or irresponsible, but teaches him to act with wisdom, while at the same time placing his ultimate hope in God.
