You will show me the path of life. In Your presence there is fullness of joy, at Your right hand there are delights forever.
The psalm ends with the promise of life, God’s presence, and everlasting joy. The words “You will show me the path of life” indicate that a person does not create the true way of life on his own; God opens it and shows it. For David, this is confidence to live under the Lord’s guidance. Yet in light of the prophetic meaning of the preceding verses, these words receive their full significance in Christ. Death was not the end of His path; He rose again and entered into the fullness of life (Acts 2:28–31). In this very light, Christ’s words also take on a deeper meaning: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). For the believer, the path of life receives its full meaning in Christ, because He not only shows that path, but by His own person leads to God and to eternal life. The words “In Your presence there is fullness of joy” show the source of a person’s ultimate blessedness. The greatest good of eternal life is not merely endless existence, but being in God’s presence and delighting in Him. Earthly joys are limited and passing, but joy in the Lord’s presence is complete. The words “At Your right hand are delights forever” also emphasize the imperishable and eternal nature of that joy. Thus the psalm, which began by asking God for protection, ends with confidence that at the end of the path that continues with Him there is not death, but life, His presence, and everlasting joy.
