You, Lord, will keep them, and You will preserve them from this generation forever.
David is confident that the Lord will keep His oppressed and faithful people. God not only sees the oppression of the poor and hears the groaning of the needy, but also preserves them from the corrupt generation in which lies, flattery, and arrogant speech are widespread. The repeated words “You will keep” and “You will preserve” emphasize the Lord’s firm and continual care. This keeping does not mean that people faithful to God will never face persecution, testing, or loss. It means that the influence of the wicked cannot finally destroy them or force them to renounce God. The Lord can keep them both from the harm inflicted by enemies and from being drawn into the surrounding corruption. Even when unfaithfulness seems widespread, God preserves those who belong to Him and strengthens them so that they remain steadfast in the truth. Therefore, the believer’s security is not in personal strength, but in the Lord’s unchanging faithfulness.
