The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in an earthen furnace, purified seven times.
Human double-minded speech is set in contrast to the Lord’s perfect word. It is “pure,” without lies, deceit, or a hidden evil purpose. The image of refined silver shows complete trustworthiness. The expression “seven times” is a poetic sign of absolute purity. God’s promise does not lose its value in trial. Just as fire reveals and removes the alloy from metal, so time and trials show the truthfulness of the Lord’s word. For the believer, this is a firm foundation in our times. Human promises can be broken, public opinions can change, but God’s word remains steadfast. This does not mean that we may interpret it carelessly according to our own desires. The Lord’s word must be read with humility, received with obedience, understood in its context, and pondered. It is not only true information, but a light that cleanses and strengthens the soul.
