David sets God’s unshakable throne against the collapse of earthly foundations: the Lord is in His holy temple, and His throne is in heaven. This does not mean that He is distant or indifferent, but that He is above all turmoil and has complete authority. The phrase “His eyes see” is a comfort for those whose suffering remains hidden from people. The expression “His gaze examines” portrays a careful and penetrating scrutiny. God does not judge only by outward appearance, but knows people’s deeds, hearts, and motives. The believer can be at peace, knowing that no secret arrow escapes the Lord’s sight. At the same time, these words remind us that no one will be able to act in secret from His searching gaze. Therefore, the Lord’s throne is a source of confidence for the person who walks uprightly, and a serious warning for those who hide hypocrisy under outward piety.
