Matthew 9:3

And look, some of the scribes said within themselves, “This man is blaspheming.”

In this passage the scribes, who were religious leaders, clearly knew that only God has authority to grant forgiveness of sins. When Jesus declared that the paralytic’s sins were forgiven, they regarded those words as blasphemy, because in doing so Jesus was making himself equal with God. In their minds Jesus was “blaspheming,” because according to their faith a human being could not have such authority. Thus, the scribes did not understand the depth of Jesus’ words, because they did not accept his divine nature.
