But when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”
With these words Jesus answers the Pharisees’ criticism, clarifying the essence of His mission. He points out that just as a physical doctor is needed for sick people, so He has come to save those who are “sick” with sin. Jesus did not come directly for the righteous, but for those who recognize their spiritual needs and are ready to repent and be restored. With this answer Jesus shows that God’s mercy is intended especially for those who are aware of their weaknesses and seek to find mercy.
