He said to them, “Go.” And they came out and entered the herd of pigs. and now, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters.
In this passage, Jesus allows the demons to move into the pigs, and the demons come out of the people, entering the herd of pigs. But under the demons’ influence, the herd immediately runs toward a steep place and falls into the sea, where the pigs drown. This story shows the destructive nature of demons, even after entering the pigs, because they immediately lead those creatures to death. It also highlights Jesus’ absolute authority: He permits them to come out of the people, but in the end they cannot remain, and this became their final ruin. This episode is a testimony to Jesus’ power: He not only is able to save people, but also governs the fate of evil powers, forcing them to depart for good and to bring their evil, harmful actions to an end.
