Jesus also said to him, “Foxes have dens, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
In response to the scribe’s offer, Jesus replies by emphasizing that following Him involves personal sacrifices. He notes that even animals—the foxes and the birds—have their secure places, but the Son of Man, Jesus, has no permanent home or place. This is a hint that His disciples also will not have material security or stability if they want to follow Him. That is, He shows that to follow Him means being ready to give up one’s own comfort and to live a life devoted to complete faith, without guarantees of material security. A follower of Jesus must be ready to accept the uncertainty and self-sacrifice that come with the path of being with Him.
