Matthew 7:9

Or who among you is the man who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone,

This saying vividly shows God’s boundless goodness and fatherly care. Jesus compares the Heavenly Father with human fathers, saying that if even imperfect people can be good toward their children, then all the more God will not refuse His children when it comes to meeting their needs. “Bread” symbolizes a person’s true need, both physical and spiritual, while “a stone” symbolizes something useless or harmful that a person may sometimes desire by mistake. This saying teaches us to trust God’s will, believing that He gives not what a person happens to ask for at random, but what is truly good and beneficial for his salvation.
