Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and does them, I will compare him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
In this saying Jesus reveals the essence of true faith, showing that hearing alone is not enough if it does not turn into action. “Hearing and doing” is presented here as an inseparable unity, and the “wise man” is the one who builds his life not on feelings or outward impressions, but on the firm truth of Christ’s word. The “house” symbolizes a person’s whole life, and the “rock” Christ’s teaching, which remains unmoved in every trial. With this image Jesus shows that only faith lived out in obedience can withstand the storms of life and remain standing before God.
