So also every good tree bears good fruit, and the bad tree bears bad fruit.
Jesus here affirms an unbreakable spiritual principle: the inner nature is inevitably expressed through deeds. Just as a tree bears fruit according to its nature, so a person does according to the quality of the heart: a good heart produces good works, and an evil one produces evil. This saying is also a continuation of the previous one, by which the difference between true and false prophets is revealed, showing that no one can keep pretending for long; the fruit always comes from the root.
