No one can serve two masters, because either he will hate one and love the other, or he will honor one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
In these words Jesus explains the indivisibility of faith, showing that the heart cannot be devoted at the same time both to God and to worldly wealth. The word “Mammon” symbolizes not only possessions, but whatever becomes the source of a person’s trust and reliance, taking God’s place. Christ clearly defines that serving two masters is impossible, because it divides the heart’s loyalty. If a person is bound in his heart to material things, he neglects spiritual values, but if his service is directed to God, then he is freed from the slavery of possessions. This saying is a call to an inner choice: serving God must be placed above everything and anything, because only he can give true peace and security.
