But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be in darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how much greater will the darkness be.
In this passage Jesus shows that the evil of the heart, mind, and spirit directly affects a person’s whole life. If a person’s spiritual outlook is pure and clear, then his life will be “bright,” filled with truth, goodness, and God’s guidance. But if his “eye,” that is, his vision, is evil, then his whole life will be dark, and all his deeds, thoughts, and choices will be harmed because of his dark-mindedness. Jesus also warns that when a person wrongly perceives good and evil, he can see darkness as light, which deepens his deception. That is, if the “light” within a person is actually darkness, then that darkness will become even greater and will cause him to move farther away from God’s truth.
