May your kingdom come, may your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth.
The phrase “May your kingdom come” points to the coming of God’s kingdom and its full establishment. In prayer it is asked that God’s rule, righteousness, and love be more clearly shown and firmly established in this world, as God desires. This also speaks about the times to come, when God’s kingdom will come in fullness and reign over all. The phrase “May your will be done” means that the one praying is obedient to God’s will and strives to live as God has intended. This is an expression of humility and trust that God’s will is best for us. Through prayer the desire is expressed that God’s will be carried out without obstacles. The phrase “As in heaven, so also on earth” speaks of the fact that in heaven God’s will is done in a perfect way, without resistance, and the one praying asks that the same perfect will be fulfilled on earth as well. This is a desire that God’s laws and goodness be just as firmly established in our life as they are in heaven.
