But the wise ones took oil in jars along with their lamps.
The wise virgins symbolize those who not only keep the light of faith, but also take care to preserve it. Their lamps are bright because they have oil—the grace of the Holy Spirit—which continually nourishes faith. Thus, wisdom here is expressed in foresight and care, so that faith does not go out at the moment of trials. Jesus’ word shows that true readiness does not consist only in the light one has in the present, but consists in continual spiritual fullness.
