In this saying Jesus explains on what basis the blessed inherit the kingdom. He shows that true faith is always expressed in deeds that are revealed through love. Feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, and welcoming the stranger symbolize not only material help, but also a spiritual attitude: showing kindness to the one in need. Christ identifies Himself with those in need, showing that every good deed, if done with love and a pure heart, is in fact directed to Him. In this way He teaches that true love toward God cannot remain indifferent to human need.
