In this verse Jesus divides the virgins into two groups, the wise and the foolish, showing that among people who are waiting for the Lord’s coming there is an essential difference. In number they are equal, which emphasizes that outward belonging and being within the same community still does not mean having the same spiritual condition. The words “wise” and “foolish” here refer not to intellectual abilities, but to spiritual prudence and readiness. This division prepares the main point of the parable: not all who are waiting are truly prepared, and only inner wisdom will determine who will remain with the Bridegroom.
