For to everyone who has, it will be given, and it will be increased, but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
This verse and the one before it reveal the unchanging law of the Kingdom of God concerning grace, responsibility, and fruitfulness, where taking the talent from the idle servant and giving it to the one who has ten talents shows that God entrusts His gift and grace to the heart that acts with faithfulness, while idleness and the closedness born of fear lead to the loss of grace. Jesus’ word, “to the one who has, it will be given and increased,” teaches that in spiritual life growth is granted through active use, because grace that is put to work is multiplied, while “from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away” refers not to a person who lacks grace, but to the one who, having received grace, did not put it to work and did not bear fruit, and therefore even the least that is in him will be extinguished. Thus Christ shows the righteous judgment by which God takes what a person himself lost through his fear and indifference, and by acting unfaithfully.
