The Lord said to him: “Well done, good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in this little, I will appoint you over much. Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
These words are the Lord’s commendation for faithfulness. Here Jesus shows that God does not measure a person’s service by its size, but by faithfulness toward what has been entrusted. “You were faithful over a little” means that the person, with a whole heart, carried out what was entrusted to him and was responsible in what had been assigned to him. That faithfulness becomes the basis for greater trust. “Enter into the joy of your Lord” is not merely a reward, but an invitation to share in the Lord’s own joy, that is, the blessedness of his presence and kingdom. This saying reveals that the final reward of faithfulness is not only a due recompense, but communion with the Lord. It also reminds us that the believer’s small but faithfully performed services form a heart to which the Lord can entrust “much,” that is, the wider scope of his work and the inheritance of his joy.
