The prepared ones—those who had kept the light of faith alive—enter the wedding place, which symbolizes the heavenly kingdom and spiritual union with Christ. But the closing of the door symbolizes the irreversible moment of judgment, when the time of grace comes to an end. This is a deep warning that the believer must not wait for the last moment, hoping to make up for what is lacking. When the door is shut, it is no longer possible to enter. There was an opportunity to enter through that door before the bridegroom’s coming, by means of the reserve oil taken beforehand—the divine grace acquired through living faith—while there was still time. This saying shows God’s justice and, at the same time, the mercy that precedes the wedding, by which everyone is given the opportunity to take oil, that is, time is given to prepare.
