And those who had been hired at the eleventh hour came, and each one received one denarius.
This verse reveals the nature of the Lord’s grace. Those who had worked only one hour receive the same one denarius that had been promised at the beginning to those who worked the whole day. By human reasoning this is unexpected, but from a divine perspective it is fully just, because the Lord distributes grace, not wages earned according to hours. This passage teaches that in the kingdom of God the reward is not based on a mathematical calculation, but on His free will and goodness. The Lord does not reward only for labor, but also rewards in response to the heart’s answer. The same denarius symbolizes eternal life, salvation, the presence of God. It is a gift, not a transaction.
