The master of the house, a figure symbolizing God, this time does not state a specific amount of wages to those newly called (as in the case of the first), but says, “Whatever is right, I will give you.” This bears witness to God’s just and free nature: He always gives a reward, but He does not always reveal it beforehand. Those who are called agree in faith, without clearly knowing how much they will receive, which symbolizes their obedient trust in grace rather than in merit. The workers of the kingdom of God sometimes do not receive a contract or a guarantee, but are called through love and obedience, trusting that God is impartial and that His justice is unbreakable.
