But the crowd rebuked them so that they would be silent, but they cried out even more loudly and said, “Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David.”
This verse shows the endurance of faith and spiritual determination in the face of outward obstacles. The crowd, instead of helping them, did the opposite and rebuked them. Yet the faith of the blind men was stronger than the voices of people. They could not see Jesus, but they knew that He could hear them, and that was enough for them. This episode reveals three important qualities of faith: 1) Patience and persistence — they do not stop pleading, even when people try to silence them. 2) Humility and deep pain of heart — they do not become angry with the crowd, but keep pleading for the same mercy. 3) A deepening faith — the more they are hindered, the stronger their cry becomes, because true faith does not fall silent even in the face of the crowd’s resistance. This story is also symbolic in the sense that the crowd often represents worldly thinking that keeps a person from turning to God, yet the one who truly believes does not keep silent. It is this kind of faith that, in the end, becomes heard before the Lord.
