And whoever among you wants to be first must be your servant,
In these verses Jesus completely reshapes human ideas about “greatness” and “being first.” He teaches that in the kingdom of God, exaltation is not gained by force, authority, or position, but by service, humility, and love. If in the previous verse (26) He says that “being great” is connected with the character of a servant, then in verse 27 He deepens the idea by saying that the true “first” is the one who wholly devotes himself to the well-being of others, becoming their servant. With these words Jesus reveals the divine paradox of humility: the more a person humbles himself, the more highly he is valued in God’s eyes. This stands in contrast to worldly thinking, where first place is won through competition, but here through sacrifice. Thus, the calling of Jesus’ disciple is not to rule, but to love, not to seek glory, but to lift up others. He teaches us that the path to being first begins at the moment when a person is ready in his heart to become last for the sake of others.
