Jesus said to her, “What do you want?” The woman said to Him, “Please say that in Your kingdom one of these two sons of mine may sit at Your right hand, and the other at Your left.”
In this saying, the woman’s request is revealed in full. Her request is simple: an honorable place for her two sons in Jesus’ kingdom. Yet this request shows that she still misunderstands the nature of Christ’s kingdom. She thinks that Jesus’ reign is like earthly power, where there are thrones, ranks, and rights of precedence. Jesus asks her, “What do you want,” not because he is unaware, but to help her express her intention and in this way expose the wrong direction of her heart. The mother’s words—that one of her sons should sit on the right and the other on the left—mean: let them be the people closest to you and holding the highest position. But as we will see next, greatness in Jesus’ kingdom is not determined by honor or authority, but by the measure of service and humility. This episode also shows that sometimes even sincere love of heart can be hindered by earthly thinking. The mother approaches with love, but her desire contradicts the essence of Jesus’ mission. The Lord does not reject this request harshly, but soon turns it into a spiritual lesson, explaining that the goal is not to be great, but to serve.
