And those hired first also came and thought that they would receive more. But they too each received one denarius.
This verse reveals the tension between human reasoning and divine grace. The “first ones,” those who had worked all day, begin to expect more when they see that the last ones also received the full denarius. Yet their wage is exactly the same as what had been promised. The Lord is not partial, but has willed to give the same to all, because His distribution is based not on relative calculation, but on His own grace and will. This teaches that in the Kingdom of God, reward is not distributed according to human expectation, but according to God’s justice and mercy. When we give everything and entrust it to God, then the repayment is greater than human calculations and expectations. But when we begin to compare our reward with that of others, we enter not the path of grace, but that of pride and limited human judgment. And this is precisely the deepest warning Jesus gives through the parable.
