But if he does not listen to you, take with you one or two more persons, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every matter may be confirmed. (Deut. 19:15)
In this saying Jesus continues the gradual and just path of brotherly correction, showing that the goal remains reconciliation and restoration, not condemnation. The involvement of one or two witnesses ensures impartiality, prevents the influence of personal feelings, and confirms the truthfulness of what is said, in accordance also with the Old Covenant (Deuteronomy 19:15) principle of the Law, according to which every testimony must be confirmed “by the mouth of two or three witnesses.” This step preserves both the dignity of the one who has sinned and justice, making the process one that serves peace and truth.
