But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.
In this saying Jesus declares that He has greater power and worth than the temple of Jerusalem. The temple was regarded as the center of God’s presence, and therefore this declaration of Jesus is significant. By it He shows that He Himself is the embodiment of God’s presence, and that the true presence and power of God are centered in Him. This declaration emphasizes that Jesus is higher; He is the person through whom people can come to God. The temple, as a holy place, was important, but Jesus presents a new, direct relationship with God that goes beyond the limits of the temple and the Law. Through Jesus people can find God’s love, mercy, and salvation, which surpass the framework of temple laws and rituals.
