And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.”
Jesus, stretching out his hand toward his disciples, as we will also see in the next verse, indicates that God’s family is made up of those who follow him and do God’s will. This statement does not reject his biological family, but emphasizes that spiritual bonds are preferable to human relationships. His disciples represent this new family, united by faith and service. This statement is also a call to accept the opportunity to become part of God’s family. In the Christian community, everyone, regardless of origin or physical relationships, can become a member of one great family, if they live according to God’s will.
