And someone said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside and want to speak with You”.
In this saying, someone informs Jesus that His mother and His brothers are outside and want to meet Him. This is a normal expression of human relationships, showing the family bond and their attention toward Him. Yet Jesus’ response to this message (in the following verses) shows that His mission has a broader, spiritual nature. Although care and love toward one’s family are important, Jesus shows that those who do the will of God make up His true family. This episode invites us to re-evaluate our own priorities, understanding that spiritual mission and doing the will of God surpass even the closest human relationships. This saying is also instructive, because in this situation Jesus clearly defines what it means to belong to God’s family: by living with faithfulness and obedience.
