Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
The Pharisees and the scribes, seeing Jesus’ miracles and hearing his teachings, despite everything that had already taken place, again demanded a “sign” as proof of his divine authority. Their question shows not a desire to understand the truth, but their skepticism and the blindness of their hearts. Throughout his mission, Jesus displayed many signs—healing people, casting out demons, and even exercising authority over natural phenomena. Yet the Pharisees and the scribes, with their hardened hearts, could not or would not recognize the source of those signs. Their demand, in essence, revealed their accusatory attitude and their rejection of Jesus. This question reminds us that faith and an open heart are necessary to recognize God’s works. When a person blindly demands “signs” without trust or readiness to see the truth, he will not be able to receive God’s revelation. Jesus had shown many times that the real problem is not the absence of signs, but their inability to accept God’s presence in their lives.
