Matthew 12:35

The good man brings out good things from the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings out evil things from his evil treasure.

In this saying Jesus emphasizes that a person’s heart is like a treasury where his inner qualities and values are kept. The “good person” keeps good thoughts, honest intentions, and God-pleasing desires in his heart, and this is expressed through his words and deeds. Such a person, having a good inner nature, naturally produces good works. In contrast, the “evil person” keeps evil, hatred, and selfishness in his heart, which is likewise expressed through his deeds and words. An evil heart cannot produce good fruit, just as an evil tree cannot bear good fruit. This saying is a clear call for us to focus on the condition of our heart: what are we storing within ourselves, good treasures or evil? Purity of heart and being filled with divine truth are the foundation of the good works that God expects from us.
