Matthew 12:23

And the whole crowd was amazed and was saying, “Could this be the Son of David?”

In this passage the people, having witnessed the miracle Jesus performed, are amazed and begin to discuss His identity. The expression “Son of David” is connected with Old Testament prophecies and symbolizes the Messiah as the heir of King David. In the prophecies (for example Jer 23:5–6, Mic 5:2) it is said that the Messiah must come from David’s line and establish God’s kingdom. The people’s amazement and their question show that Jesus’ works match the expectations about the Messiah, yet at the same time they are uncertain. This statement reflects people’s thoughts about whether to accept or not accept Jesus as the Messiah.
