In these words Jesus does not answer John the Baptist’s question with a direct declaration, but directs him to the real facts—the works that testify to the presence of the kingdom of God. The phrase “what you hear and see” emphasizes that Christ’s messianic identity is confirmed not by words alone, but by visible, tangible, and audible deeds that correspond to the prophetic promises. In this way Jesus invites John to return to the foundations of faith: to see God’s work in action and, through it, to find assurance that the awaited Messiah is already at work.
