Are you the One who was to come, or should we wait for another?
The disciples of John the Baptist, who had been sent by him, come to Jesus with this question in order to confirm His identity. John, having heard about the works of Jesus, wants to find out whether Jesus is the promised Messiah whom they were expecting, or whether they should still wait for someone else. This question expresses a certain expectation and probably also uncertainty, since John wanted to know with greater clarity about Jesus’ mission and role. For John and his disciples, it was important to know whether Jesus is the Savior whom the Jews had been awaiting for centuries.
