And John, being in prison, hearing about the works of Christ, sent his disciples and through them asked Him.
In this passage, John the Baptist, who had been imprisoned by Herod, hears about the works Jesus has done and, being interested and likely also seeking confidence to some extent, sends his disciples to Jesus to ask (as we will see next) whether He is the Messiah. This step by John shows that even spiritual leaders who have devoted their lives to God can, in darkened circumstances, seek confirmation or clarification.
