In this saying the previous thought continues, where Jesus describes people’s capricious and unbalanced attitude toward God’s message and toward those He has sent. The expressions “We played the flute, and you did not dance” and “We mourned, and you did not grieve” show that people have certain expectations, yet they remain dissatisfied regardless of what is offered to them. With this comparison Jesus points out that people often do not accept the message that God sends to them, no matter what form it takes.
