For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
In these words Jesus points out that up to John the Baptist, all the prophets and the Law were foretelling the coming of the Messiah. The prophets, through their prophecies, and the Law, through its instructions, were preparing people for the One who would come and fulfill God’s promise of salvation. John the Baptist holds a unique place, because he is the very prophet who announces the Messiah’s immediate coming, preparing the way for Jesus. With these words Jesus emphasizes that John is regarded as the one who fulfills the concluding role of prophecy and the Law, because through him the old era comes to an end and a new door is opened through God’s Son, Jesus Christ.
