Jehoram was the father of Uzziah. Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz. Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
This verse continues David’s royal genealogy, including the kings of Judah in whose days there were both faithfulness and betrayal toward God. Uzziah (also called Oziah, that is, Uzziah) was for a long time a righteous and successful king, but through pride he fell and was punished with leprosy (2 Chronicles 26:3–21). His son Jotham remained devout and righteous, strengthening the foundations of the land. Ahaz, his son, became a contrary example: he introduced the worship of idols and even sacrificed his own son (2 Chronicles 28:1–4). Yet his son Hezekiah became a devout king, restoring the worship of the Lord, cleansing the temple, and relying on God even in the time of the Assyrian threat (2 Kings 18:1–7). This generational chain shows that God’s promise is not broken even in times of moral decline, and that the messianic line is preserved by the power of grace.
