Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram.
This verse continues David’s royal genealogy by presenting the succession of the kings of Judah. Asa, a godly and righteous king, made efforts to restore the worship of the Lord and to remove the worship of idols (2 Chronicles 14:2–5). His son Jehoshaphat was known for his wisdom and godliness; he strengthened Judah and encouraged the teaching of the Law among the people (2 Chronicles 17:7–9). Jehoshaphat’s son Jehoram, contrary to his father’s example, turned aside from the faith by marrying Ahab’s daughter and introducing foreign forms of worship. This sequence shows that the messianic line continues not because of human righteousness, but by virtue of God’s unchanging promise.
