Matthew 1:5

Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab. Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth. Obed was the father of Jesse. Jesse was the father of King David.

This passage continues the genealogy of Jesus Christ’s ancestors, emphasizing the triumph of grace and faith over a person’s past. Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, who was known as the prostitute of Jericho. By faith she protected the Israelites (Joshua 2:1–21) and became an example of faith. Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, a Moabite woman, who was known for her devotion and faithfulness (Ruth 1:16–17). Obed was the father of Jesse, the father of David, who became one of Israel’s notable kings. This genealogy shows that the messianic promise is fulfilled also through those who have a foreign and sinful past, emphasizing that God’s salvation is given by faith, not by lineage.
