Matthew 1:25

And he did not know her until she had given birth to her firstborn Son, and he named Him Jesus.

This verse concludes the account of Christ’s birth, affirming Mary’s purity and Joseph’s obedient faith. Joseph, believing the angel’s word, remained abstinent from marital relations until the birth of the Holy Child, honoring the divine mystery. By the expression “firstborn son,” the evangelist emphasizes not merely the existence of subsequent children, but also Jesus’ preeminence and His unique divine origin. Joseph carried out the command given to him by naming the Child Jesus, which means “The Lord saves,” thus confirming the fulfillment of the messianic promise.
