Matthew 1:17

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David to the Babylonian captivity fourteen generations, and from the Babylonian captivity to Christ fourteen generations.

This verse summarizes the genealogy of Jesus Christ, emphasizing divine ordering and historical continuity. The Evangelist divides the entire chain of generations into three parts, each of fourteen generations: the first, from Abraham to David—the period of faith and promise; the second, from David to the Babylonian exile—the era of the kingdom’s glory and decline; and the third, from the exile to Christ—the time of expectation and the fulfillment of salvation. This threefold division shows that God governs human history not by chance, but wisely and purposefully. Each stage has its own mission.
