After the deportation to Babylon, Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.
This verse indicates the rebirth of the messianic genealogy after the Babylonian captivity. As was said in the previous verse, Jeconiah is taken captive to Babylon, where his son Shealtiel is also born. Shealtiel became the representative of the generation that began the restoration of hope after the captivity. His son Zerubbabel played a significant role in the people’s return and in the rebuilding of the temple, in the days of Cyrus king of Persia. He led the first returnees and became a living symbol of messianic hope, as the continuer of God’s promise. This passage shows that even captivity and a devastated land did not hinder the preservation of the messianic line.
