Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amon. Amon was the father of Josiah.
This verse presents the chain of three successive kings of Judah, showing both the depth of sin and the possibility of repentance within God’s plan. Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, reigned for a long time, but became known for his wicked deeds—restoring the worship of idols and even sacrificing his sons (2 Kings 21:1–9). Yet after being taken captive, he repented and returned to the Lord in prayer (2 Chronicles 33:10–16). His son Amon continued in evil ways and was killed by his own servants. Amon’s son Josiah, a devout and righteous king, became a symbol of the cleansing of the temple and the restoration of God’s law, carrying out God-pleasing reforms (2 Kings 22–23). This generation testifies that God’s providence works even where sin reigns, and His promise remains steadfast from generation to generation.
