And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
Moses and Elijah do not appear here by chance. Moses represents the Law, and Elijah the prophecies. Thus the whole Old Covenant comes to stand around Christ and to bear witness about Him. They were speaking not only with one another, but with Jesus Himself, because He is the center of history. Moses once gave the law, and Elijah, with prophetic zeal, defended true worship (1 Kings 18), but both find their fulfillment in Christ. Their presence also shows that the dead are alive to God and that the saints share in His plan. Traditional interpretation also emphasizes that Moses, who had seen death (Deuteronomy 34:5), and Elijah, who was taken up alive (2 Kings 2:11), together represent both the dead and the living who remain, all of whom must be under Christ’s authority. This appearance also confirms that Christ’s path to the cross was not accidental, but the continuation of the same divine plan to which the Law and the prophets had borne witness.
