And His garments became shining, exceedingly white, such that no launderer on earth can whiten them so much.
The Evangelist, in human language, tries to describe the indescribable. The brightness of the garments bears witness to the glory that was coming not from an external source, but from Christ’s very person. The whiteness here is a symbol of holiness, heavenly purity, and incorruptible glory. A radiance that no launderer can produce shows that here we are dealing not with created beauty, but with the glory of the Creator. The Lord, for a moment, unveils His divine majesty so that the disciples may understand who He truly is. For them this was to become a light remembered in the darkness of the cross, that is, when later they would see Him humbled, abused, and crucified, they would remember that He is the same Lord who, in the Transfiguration, revealed His heavenly glory.
